Upcoming Season

Hello Parents and Climbers!

The bouldering season is getting underway soon! Can you feel the excitement?!?!

This email is to get everyone ready for the season and upcoming events:

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Next week's Monday Team session (Originally on Sept. 4th) is moved to Friday September 8th. 6:00-8:30 due to the holiday.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

2) 519 Showdown (Recreation Competition) at The Junction,  Sun September 10th, 3pm - 6pm in London. Below is the email from The Junction. This is an optional team event, for fun and experience only.

General Comp Info

The comp is between the youth teams from Junction, Grand River Rocks, Core, and the Grotto. Each competitor will complete climbs on the boulder, route wall, and SPEED WALL! Basically, we're doing a mini mock version of what will be in the Olympics in 2020. We will have a winner for each age/sex category as well as an overall TEAM award.

Climbing Breakdown

The comp is a scramble format - 3 hrs to complete all climbing (i.e. there is no isolation, and no scheduled times for the routes/speed). Boulder - Each age division will have 5 boulder problems; top 3 will contribute to score

Routes - 2 routes per age category in flash format; there will be scored bonus holds progressive through the climb. One route will be more difficult than the other, to create space between scores.

Speed - Obviously we do not have the right sized walls for "official" speed climbing. The speed will be on speed holds; each climber will have 1 go on each speed line. The faster of the two times will contribute to their score.

and 2 tries on speed (fastest time of the two is the final score). These are combined to make each climber's overall score. Speed holds will be going up at Junction on approx. Aug 30 if anyone wants to come practice beforehand.

Logistics

Comp is on September 10 (a Sunday). Competitor briefing is at 3pm, climbing from 3:30-6:30pm, awards at 7pm (as it is a school night).

Lead Climbers - competitors in the B, A, and Junior categories will need to do a lead climbing test. There will be a Junction staff member on starting at noon on September 10 to do tests on a first-come-first-served basis.

Registration

Registration is now OPEN! It is done online; site is not open to the public, it is only available via this link: http://junctionclimbing.com/519-showdown/ and the password is "compseason". Please have parents register their climber(s) in the category they were for the OCF 2016-2017 season NOT the coming season (so competitors new to B-division don't have to compete in lead before they are ready). There is no Open Category.

  • Cost is $25 for the comp paid online at registration
  • This comp is ONLY open to climbers who are part of one of the aforementioned gym teams either during the summer season or planning on being on team in the fall - one of the perks of being on a youth team! There is no open category.
  • Registration will CLOSE on September 8 at 11:59pm in order for setters to have an idea of what level they are setting at

COMP!

First things first. Excellent job the last few weeks. The team is really coming together and a good flow for the day-to-day is taking shape.

Keep showing up. Keep trying hard. Keep pushing each other.

Remember to be active in your participation of the warmups, exercises and drills that we do. Passive jumping jacks aren't going to help anyone.

For everyone that is showing up for the comp this weekend, please remember that this is a fun comp. It's a chance to celebrate the opening of The Core so it won't be a conventional comp.

That said, please come to win. The team goal is to get stressed and try hard. We want to push ourselves and learn how we react during the real thing. Until the comp is over, we're Athletes. After the comp, we can have cake.

Coach Brady wants lots of sleep in your schedules tonight. Have a healthy breakfast and get amped. A pro-tip for keeners is clean your room and put your climbing gear out TONIGHT so you have everything ready.

Doors open at 10am and we will be leading a warm up and review goals for the day.

Keep up the good work!

Goals

Team!

I've had a chance to debrief with the coaches here and I've only heard good things. I'm super pumped to see that we've started off training strong.

For next practice, I'd like to sit down with each of you and talk goals.
