Next She Crushes Night

  • Date: September 29th, 2019

Check out our Facebook Group for more information.

Every month, the Core hosts She Crushes, a ladies-only night, to give female climbers a comfortable, productive environment in which they can climb their best.

The gym closes early (which means we kick all the men out) and the gym staff are also female – which means the ladies truly take over! We welcome all persons who identify as female or who are gender non-conforming, and we welcome climbers of all abilities. She Crushes is a great time to try climbing if you’re a first-timer.

Join our Facebook group to stay up-to-date on all of our events and announcements, and to see photos from previous events.

What Happens at She Crushes

She Crushes is a time for female climbers to climb, train, share beta and have a good time with each other. There is no additional cost for She Crushes other than a regular gym day pass or membership (that is to say, the night is free for members!).

We have dedicated organizers to help new climbers learn the basics of climbing and answer any questions you may have. For more experienced climbers who already crush hard, we offer special clinics, such as:

  • outdoor skills

  • advanced bouldering techniques

  • dynamic movement

  • the art of projecting

  • training

  • climbing shoes: the good, the bad and the ugly

If you’re interested in one of the clinics, or if you have a topic you’d like to learn more about that isn’t listed, let us know

Perks of She Crushes

  • No boys allowed! The gym is closed to male climbers.

  • A safe and welcoming environment for climbers of all abilities.

  • Expert female climbers are there to answer all your questions.

  • There’s room to move. With the boys gone, the gym is less busy and you can take all the time and space you need to work your project.

  • Feel-good tunes are on blast!

  • Beat the heat in the summer months! The Core is air conditioned.

Meet the Organizers

Height: 5’ 8 1/2” (174 cm)

Ape index: -1.5 (5’ 7” / 170 cm)

Years climbing: 7

Favourite type of climbing: Bouldering (indoors and outdoors) and sport (outdoors).

Shoe of choice: La Sportiva Miura VS (size 38.5).

Favourite climbing area: Red Rocks – I love the desert heat, I love sandstone, and it has every type of climbing you could ever want!

Favourite hold: Crimps for days!

Least-favourite hold: Mathematics/prisms (although I am slowly learning to appreciate them).

Biggest gumby moment: Getting my hair caught in a gri-gri while I was belaying during a climbing competition (always tie your hair back when operating a belay device!).

Why I support ladies-only night: Over the years I have experienced and seen less-than-desirable behaviour from men at climbing gyms. Often these behaviours are not coming from a place of maliciousness, but it can still be hard to feel at home in an environment dominated by men giving terrible climbing advice or shouting unwanted beta at you. I also think women can crush harder than they know and want to create an environment where we can help each other achieve our goals.

Ask me about: Training for climbing, climbing technique, outdoor climbing, beta (I will spray all day – if you want it!).

Height: 5’ 3” (160 cm)

Ape index: 0 (5’ 3” / 160 cm)

Years climbing: 4.5

Favourite type of climbing: Bouldering on overhang.

Shoe of choice: Scarpa.

Favourite climbing area: Squamish.

Favourite hold: Small ledges where I can match but people with bigger hands can’t. ;)

Least-favourite hold: Pockets.

Biggest gumby moment: I was climbing outdoors in a very chossy and sharp area with no shirt on (sports bra only), when my foot slipped and my stomach cheese grated painfully down the rock!

Why I support ladies-only night: It creates an incredible environment to forge new relationships with other lady crushers. These friendships are important whether they push you a little harder, encourage you, or team up with you to work through an especially tough problem. Also, other girls are great to steal beta from (most times)!

Ask me about: Outdoor climbing and outdoor bouldering areas in Canada.

Height: 5’ 2” (157 cm)

Ape index: -2 (5’ 0” / 152 cm)

Years climbing: 9+

Favourite type of climbing: Bouldering.

Shoe of choice: For many years, I loved La Sportiva’s Testarossa shoe, but now I wear Vapors (Scarpa).

Favourite climbing area: In Ontario it would be Tobermory. The U.S. has good bouldering in many states.

Favourite hold: Crimps! I can crimp anything!

Least-favourite hold: Slopers.

Signature climbing move: High feet and heel hooks.

Why I support ladies-only night: It’s a great opportunity for girls of all levels to come up and start bouldering, learn new skills and techniques from other ladies and progress together. It also is wonderful for the community because climbing is a great exercise while being a super social sport!

Ask me about: I have been coaching climbing to all levels from beginners to youth team, so I am happy to answer any questions regarding training plans or technique or simply help to solve a problem on the wall. Don’t be shy!
